Hard habit to break

Hard habit to break

After spending 5 months wishing for the end of my internship, my last day at Sentosa has finally arrived. Yet, instead of the sheer ecstasy that I had expected to hit me, a sense of a loss and a heavy heart overwhelms.

As I slowly discovered the nooks and crannies of Sentosa and her hidden gems, the unfamiliar maze of an island grew to be like a second home, and unfamiliar faces grew to become faces I looked forward to seeing everyday.

Running for the bus every morning and seeing the ever-friendly bus drivers, making a mad rush into my department and exchanging hurried greetings and earfuls of gossip, and even my messy work station have all become so much of a routine. I can barely imagine what life would be like without having to pry myself out of bed at 7 each morning. Sentosa has become a hard habit to break.

Now, apart from my coffee mug and a few stray paperclips, my once messy table is empty. The end has come, though now much too soon for me. It is with a heavy heart that I have to leave the island and the many people I've learned to love behind.

I was offered a full-time job upon my graduation from TP, and though it means alot to be offered that opportunity, I doubt I'll be taking it up. I might change my mind to pursue writing in a couple of years, but my journalism dreams are staying, for now.

Pink flowers and polo shirts

Pink flowers and polo shirts
Feeling: Introspective

It feels nothing like a Friday at work even though I'm all cooped up in the office. My mind's drifting with visions of flower gardens, cheerful blooms and English tea. And believe it or not, a blackforest cake is circulating around the office. Me being me, I took a slice. To think dinner with Huihui at Glutton Square tonight awaits. Hmm. Glutton Square. How apt. Haha!

"I'm on my own, a million miles away, temptation's all around. I won't be long, so please be strong, 'cos I'm holding on for you."
This verse's snitched off Liberty X's Holding On For You. I've spent too much time wondering how couples manage to stay faithful, and I've asked Jason that question too many a time. Seems like I've finally gotten my answer.

Temptation is really all around. No matter how perfect and attractive your other half may be, someone else will be bound to catch your eye, at least once in this lifetime (unless you spend your whole life in seclusion of course). While one's will to fight temptation will ultimately be put to test, I believe having a happy relationship is the foundation to fidelity.

When Jason and I went through a terribly rough patch back in 2004, temptation was as alluring as it could ever be, and the line between friendly bantering and flirting was crossed. Fortunately, that has been left in the past and things are better than ever now that we've cleared our heads to get our act together.

9 months later, with him away at army, temptation beckons yet again. (Come on, I'm not blind to not be physically attracted to someone okay.) This time around however, the urge to flirt ceases to exist. Seeing an eye-candy can probably make an otherwise mundane life a little less boring, but nothing beats the love and warmth that fills my heart each time I see my boyfriend when he books out. There's no more I hanker after - I've already gotten the best. :)

When the 3 Cs get the better of you.

When the 3 Cs get the better of you

On the third day after my fever, I fell back into the routine of muching on dark chocolate. (Yes, chocolate is one of the Cs. The other two are cookies and chips - chocolate's heaty counterparts.) My rationale: It is less heaty than munching on a box of popcorn, for one can only take so much of dark chocolate at a time, no? 5 days later, I have forgotten all about abstaining from chips and cookies, despite that tiny nagging bit of a sore left tonsil. Today, exactly 7 days later, I am paying for it. My left tonsil hurts like shit.

I got real irritated yesterday. Funny how people get in touch only when they need help. Since when did I become a weatherman, or photographer???

Dubai dates are out. 23 - 27 November. For the first time since the army claimed his 2 years' worth of freedom, our November anniversary falls on a Saturday - bookout day! And I'll be halfway round the world. Brilliant. Sigh.

An impromptu philosophical conversation with a colleague about life made me think. People often say that humans are brought onto Earth to suffer, but is that really true? Sure, I bet we all get our fair share of life's bitchiness, but there are also really beautiful moments worth all the bad that happens. If life were to be all sugar and spice and everything nice as Heaven is depicted to be, won't we start taking the nice-ness for granted? I think we need some sorrow to appreciate the joy and with that, I conclude that life really ain't that bad. It is as good as you want it to be.

Now now, when did I get so positive? :)

Burn baby, burn.

Burn baby, burn.

I'm feeling extremely lazy, too lazy for my 6k run later. No excuse though, for I'd finally made the life-changing decision of replacing my weather-beaten Reeboks with a proper pair of Aasics yesterday.

I feel like I've passed the better part of this week in a daze. Time at work seems to pass by so quickly yet so slowly, get me? Speaking of which, it's 7 more working days to go before a week of morning cartoons await.

"The best breakfast on earth is cereal, milk and morning cartoons."

Well said, Cecilia.

A thousand snow days

It makes me
ridiculously happy
just snuggling together with you
seeking warmth on a rainy day.

Pressed against
your sweater-clad frame
I lost myself
In a daydream of a thousand snow days.

For a moment, time stood still and everyone else ceased to exist.
All I could hear was the fall of raindrops.
All I could see was your familiar face.
All I could feel was the brush of your lips against my hair and the feel of your hand around my waist.
Caught in the monotonous rhythm of life, it's moments like these that remind us we're alive.

meartistic

I feel so gay in a melancholic way, it might as well be spring.

I bought Aubrey's Spring cd as a birthday present to myself, and I haven't gotten around to playing it till today. (Aubrey Ng is a local jazz singer.) The first track - It Might As Well Be Spring has got such great lyrics, I couldn't resist ripping off one of the lines as my title, heh. I feel like her music robs me of my blogging inspiration though, so I've switched to Norah Jones instead. Never fails. :)

It's been a good weekend, despite the rain getting in everybody's way. Did dinner with Shaun on Friday night at Anchorpoint. I was supposed to get my running shoes, but superficial me just didn't fall bait to those unsexy (read: functional) designs.

Had a good swim with CH on Satuday morning. He said my speed and style have both improved! That sure left me on cloud nine, for I have never been much of a swimmer. Saturday evening was spent over at Jason's granny's place for his ah-gong's birthday celebration. Like all his family gatherings, this was a noisy and festive affair. Stole away in the night to catch The Myth which wasn't quite as bad as I'd imagined really. I rather enjoyed it actually, haha!

Caught Deuce Bigalow at Jubilee today before having a piping hot KFC lunch to ease the cold. It's been awhile since I've been out in such heavy rain. Laughed the afternoon away with his brother and girlfriend on the couch watching some Chinese version of Punk'd, had a quick dinner, then sent him off to camp. The hours pass too soon.

Bada Bing Bada Bang

Bada Bing Bada Bang

I'm ill. What started out as a teeny sore throat yesterday has manifested into fever and throat infection in a matter of hours. I went to work in the morning 'cos I thought the worse was over, and also because I couldn't imagine staying at home all day with nothing to do. Bad choice. I headed back for home in an hour. Piling on the makeup sure didn't help me look healthy, Marilyn flipped when she saw me in the office. "Girl, you look terrible." Whatever happened to the wonder of cosmetics? Haha.

Most of the day was spent in bed reading tabloid magazines (courtesy of Robin), drifting in and out of sleep, and answering phone calls. Maybe I haven't been bitten by the fever bug but the popularity bug! Hah, bad joke.
In case you're wondering, my entry title is inspired by the name of some bath jelly I saw in the magazine. Cool huh, whatever it means.

I'm pretty bummed that I didn't get to do my 6k today, and I have a feeling the medicine's gonna affect my stamina. This sucks. Let's hope the strength returns to my limbs and I'll be able to do a run before work tomorrow.

Scents good to me

Scents good to me

I read in an article somewhere that smells can trigger the most emotions/memories than any of our other senses can, and I agree completely.

The smell of chlorine in swimming pools makes me think of Friday evenings as a child, swimming with my dad in the pool at Marina Mandarin.

This particular fruity fragrance makes me think of my stay with my sis at Rasa Sentosa Shangri La in 2001.

A whiff of my Flower by Kenzo fragrance whisks me off to the time I first wore it for a date (that totally flopped) with this arty-farty guy.

CK Be makes me think of my brother. He's been wearing that scent since forever. (19 years at least, haha!)

The smell of Dove deodorant reminds me of my holiday to Bali in 2002.

The smell of lemongrass essential oils or lemongrass-scented candles reminds me of my sarong/ fisherman pants phase and then of Aileen and inokii, a shop I used to work at in Far East Plaza.

The smell of Pantene shampoo reminds me of my recent holiday to Tioman.

Smelling the skin beside Jason's lips always makes me feel comforted.

Three times the cake

Three times the cake

I've had so much cake this birthday, not that I'm complaining, heh. (Think my waist is though, haha.)
1st - 30 Sep, surprise from HTMIG 03/04
2nd - 3 Oct, surprise from Sentosa peeps
3rd - 7 Oct, surprise from the Spottiswoode club
P.s. All 3 cakes were chocolate. Mmm.

Okay, my bragging rights have officially expired.

It's been a good weekend I think. A good part Friday night was spent with "The Spottiswoode Club" over at CH's place having cake and Kenrick's decadent dark chocolate fondue. We just sat there for hours talking, from biology (courtesy of Kenrick's medicine knowledge) to the Bali blasts.
Crawled out of bed early the next day to work off the sin with Cindy Crawford. I think I'm getting used to this trainer of mine - my legs no longer suffer from the post-Crawford ache, haha! Went for a swim in the cold after-rain pool with Ken and CH in the later part of the morning. (We were feeling REALLY guilty you see.) The swim was good though, refreshing without the heat of a sunny day. Luxury.

The rest of the day (and night) was spent with Jason who has finally booked out of OCS, after the first gruelling three weeks. We had lunch with his mates, snuggled up, then headed out for dinner and a movie. Let's just say watching Jessica Alba in Into The Blue was extremely motivational in making me want to work out for 3 hours a day and eat rabbit food. (I'll die.)
The Island Shop is having another of its mega sales by the way. Got myself a pretty wrap skirt at 50% off. -whistles-

Today was pretty much errand/shopping day for us. He got his white shirts and stationery, and I got my Levis, Mango top and goggles. And we had time to catch another movie - Goal. It's a great inspirational film and not at all boring (don't worry girls). I might just increase my frequency of watching football games on the couch with my dad!

Bobbing my head to country music

Bobbing my head to country music

I'm alone in the department now. Everyone else has either gone off for some meeting or to meet some media. So I'm blasting country music (courtesy of www.music.yahoo.com) from my earphones and taking a bit of a break. It's not like I'm up till my ears in work or anything though, my current workload prolly reaches up only to my ankles, haha! Everything's sorta winding down, now that I'm just 3 weeks from my last day. I wonder if I'll cry.

The country beat has gotten abit too much, switched to my Creative instead. Have I ever raved about Chances Are from the Ally Mcbeal soundtrack? It's definitely one of my all time faves.
I've been feeling a little bored and unproductive bored these days with the lack of nerve-wrecking work, counting the hours till it's time for lunch or time to go, so I'm gonna say this:
THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY!

Come tomorrow, I'll finally get to hang out with Jason after his 3-week confinement in OCS. Was a little cranky when we spoke last night. All of a sudden, I just couldn't adapt to listening to his voice (he's just gotten back from outfield, and we haven't really properly talked the past 2 weeks) and I'd forgotten how to share about my life. Ah well. Think I'm gonna ketok my boyfriend for my birthday present. We didn't get to celebrate my birthday together 'cos of that confinement. Tsk.

Had dinner with the family last night at my dad's restaurant, and my uncle started talking about terrorism and how it was just a matter of time before we get hit. That was scary. It totally unnerved me. I don't want to lose any of my family and friends to such crazy man-made havoc. What is wrong with these people? They're acting like they're brainwashed or something.

Been a little confused of late. My mind's been reeling with questions of the future - where should I go from here? I'm not sure NTU is that good a choice. Urghs. Beach bum beach bum beach bum.

55 minutes to lunch. =)

Idiosyncrasies of a messy female

Idiosyncrasies of a messy female

My messiness has gotten me into trouble, again. It's not like it ain't enough of a hassle having to dig through piles of junk to find a certain sheet of paper, or to wrestle through my messed-up wardrobe every morning to find that particular white top (trust me, I've got tons of white tops, and it's instances like this that make me want to kill myself for that). I got an invitation to apply for a scholarship, and I can't seem to find my most recent exam result slip! Trust me to be so slip-shot about documents like this. The cut-off date's this coming Monday... urghs.

So the Bali trip is cancelled. I'd be lying if I said I'm not disappointed, but I guess it's just fate that I should broaden my horizons and go somewhere else. I was really looking forward to visiting Bali and to embrace its culture once more. I'm okay with our choice to go to Dubai (though I'm not crazy about it), but I'm half hoping there'd be a new destination option, heh.

My brother got me $200 worth of Levis vouchers for my birthday. Man. I need to go shopping soon, haha!

Took a drive down to Sentosa Cove with my department to peep at the property developments. My my, that place has got a fantastic sea view. It'd be like living in an upmarket beach resort I reckon.

Has anyone realised I haven't been attending my yoga classes? LOL! I don't know why I can't bring myself to go! So much for cultivating inner peace.

Bought some lip-smacking good Sweet House Farm (or is it Sweet Farm House) cereal when a sudden need to be domestic took me to the supermarket last night. Granola with raisins - wholesome and good for the body, unlike those overly sweet cereals for kids. But knowing me, I try so hard to be healthy, but end up pretty unhealthy most of the time, haha!

It's 5.40pm... less an hour before Eileen and I leave for our run. Feeling a little lazy actually, but it'll pass. All the cake I've had these couple of days has left me feeling kinda flabby around the waist, eeks, but it's nothing a run won't cure. :) I hope this week's 6k won't kill me.

I can't watch RA movies yet!

I'm can't watch RA movies yet!

Tuty came running up to me today, gave me a huge hug and said, "Happy 21st birthday darling!" Goodness no! I just turned 19, still a good two years away from 21! But it was a laugh. :)

I woke up this morning feeling like it was any other day. It's funny how my anticipation for birthdays wanes with each passing year. I wonder how I'll be like when I turn 40! Nevertheless, my Sentosa colleagues made this day extremely special. The A&E and lunch gang surprised me with a Coffeebean bear during lunch (I've named him Blankie), and just awhile ago, the gang together with my department came walking in with a chocolate fudge cake! I can't stop smiling really!

And surpassing the bear, the cake and the Creative Zen my department splurged on, what touched me most was something written on my birthday card from the Comms team - "You're our best intern ever!" :) I'm all smiles.

I've got a family who loves me, a boyfriend whose heart I know is with me though he's away at camp, a bitchy best friend who remembers my birthday, a bunch of fun-loving colleagues, and a pal who told me he's saving Monday for me. Thanks you all, I am most blessed. :)

Are you happy now?

Are you happy now?

My heart stopped in my chest when I saw Jasmine's message. "Oh no. Darling bombing." I was at a dinner party with my colleagues over at my boss', and our post-dinner plan to chill out with champagne and chocolates on the couch gave way to watching BBC in shock.

Bali has had a place in my heart ever since my maiden trip in June 2002, several months before the first blasts. There was something about the sincerity of its people and the rustic charm of the island that drew me in, and I wept when the blasts shocked the world. I didn't understand why anyone would want to hurt the serenity of the paradise island.

I didn't shed a tear this time around. I am angry, and I am extremely indignant. What is the motive spurring the bombers to destroy the island again and again? What have they got to gain by once again hurting the island they had wrecked three years ago? Do they really have to go to such extent to make a point? And what exactly is their point? Have they made it their mission in life to cause mayhem and bring sorrow to mankind by robbing the lives of loved ones? They have no right.

I sure hope they are suicide bombers, for they do not deserve a place amongst the living.
