Inspire me.

Inspire me.
feeling: wasted.
spinning: bic runga and dan wilson - good morning baby

I am never very fond of going to the central business district, or being around office crowds for that matter. Something about being amongst the eclectic mix of well-suited Caucasians, well-dressed locals who exude success and the in-betweens (includes the badly-dressed PA looking types) makes me feel mighty uncomfortable. I'm no longer kid enough to ogle and aspire to be like the woman clad in Prada barking orders down her cellphone, yet I'm not yet adult enough to join these office ranks.

While jostling my way through the lunch-time crowd, a lady at one of the chic cafes caught my eye. Dressed simply in a timeless black shift dress, she looked to be in her late thirties and was lunching with a group of three other women. While I only stole a glance (come on, you don't expect me to stop and stare at her like some psycho on the sidewalk), for that moment she was the role model to the little girl inside me. I don't know what it is exactly that she's working as (managerial type I'm guessing) but she looked polished and smart enough to hold her place in that office chaos. And that was enough to have Shenton Way-fearing-me awed.

After a whole five months of doing almost nothing (excluding my editorial internship) and feeling all lost and crappy; yesterday, I finally grasped a little of where I want my life to head.

This post probably might not make any sense at all to most, but I'm hoping that there'll be someone out there who'll understand what it is I am trying to say.

Blow my mind.

Blow my mind.

While flipping through my Phuket pictures a couple of weeks back, Jem looked at me and said, "Wow you take really good pictures! Can I blow up some for my room?" Now, for someone who has constantly been told "I think you'd better go take some photography lessons", that compliment had me in awe for a good three weeks.

I once read in a Jayne Ann Krentz novel that there are pretty pictures (which most can take given luck) and then there are pictures. Pretty pictures are just attractive and pleasing to the eye. Pictures on the other hand may not necessarily be pretty but they come alive and draw you in. Now, I think I just got lucky at Phuket. However, if I really do intend to plunge into journalism (Lord bless my soul), then I will definitely book myself a couple of lessons.

What spurred this whole entry on photography was actually one of Jason's pictures. His explanation of the story behind the picture and the caption had me dumbfounded. He sure has one hell of a complex mind.

I'm thinking. Now I know I am not academically dumb, but I am definitely not political or general reading savvy either. (Simply put, I am almost certain I will choose a fashion magazine over a book on European history.) Pit me against someone who's well-read in politics and world history and I will be seen as the bimbo. Even if my knowledge of fashion is equivalent to that of that someone's knowledge in politics. Now is that a fair judgement? Think Jessica Simpson.

Complex talk aside, I had a pretty good week. I got to catch Just My Luck on my girly night out with Ceci. Sometime through the show, it finally clicked that Samaire Armstrong (from The O.C) is the female lead in Daniel Powter's Bad Day video! I can't believe it took me that long to put two to two together.

And I finally visited Villa Bali after much talk about it. For the uninitiated, Villa Bali's a bali-type bar in Little Bali Singapore. Flora, fauna, wood... I like. And the company, though rather eclectic, worked out pretty well. A pity I'd forgotten to bring my camera or I would have definitely snapped some shots.

My train of thought's kinda running all scattered, as you can tell from my post I'm sure. Time to hit the sheets and recharge. And regroup. Night world.

Folk dancing on sandy shores.

Folk dancing on sandy shores.
feeling: in need of direction
spinning: travel tunes on yahoo radio

I think my owe my stomach an apology. First I starved it on a Sunday morning when I should be treating it to a leisure breakfast of toast and steaming coffee. Instead, I treated it to a late late brunch at Projectshop Cafe consisting of half an orgasmic caesar salad and half a roast chicken sandwich. (I split them with a fellow stomach-torturer. Scroll down for pictures to whet your tastebuds.)

After the travel deal hunting got too much to bear three hours later, my partner-in-crime and I made a pit stop at Swensens and treated our semi-concussed bodies to a ice-cream induced sugar high. We decided on a Topless Five (that's five scoops of ice-cream for the uninitiated) coupled with hot fudge and chocolate cereal bits. Minus that scoop of yucky Pistachio Almond which we left untouched, we decided that an approximate of two scoops each just didn't cut it. And so we ordered yet another Topless Five, this time really topless. With much will and determination, we managed to scarf down half of the second order.

4+2.5 = 6.5

6.5/2 = 3.25 scoops of ice-cream each

Now that ain't so bad! I could barely swallow a bite of proper food for dinner after the ice-cream abuse though.

Bad food choices aside, I think we're gonna be holidaying in Langkawi! I THINK. We'll see how our plans go.

Adeline's finally back from the US. Lunching at the new Palawan Beach Koufu with Roger tomorrow. :)

Acceptance.

Acceptance.

I think my Ireland fever has subsided. And I think you guys probably have had enough of all that Irish ranting! While my current book, a more chick-lit-y read by aptly titled The Bride Wore Chocolate, has yet to get me all hot about Boston where it is set, I have quite the urge to try out one of the many chocolate recipes featured inside. Hmm, maybe I will.

My Nokia phone fell apart on Thursday. (About time I say!) I shall not go into details except that I've replaced it with a sleek Motorola V3. In fuschia. I was actually undecided between that and classic black, but the Starhub guy sealed half the deal by telling me that it is a limited edition, and the other half by telling me about its connection to Maria Sharapova. I'm not a fan of hers, but the celebrity connection tempts me EVERYTIME. No regrets though, I'm diggin' it.

Dined at Blu Jaz (again) last night with Ceci. The place always makes me feel like I'm away on a resort holiday and their Chicken Salad is pretty darn good. Speaking of resort holidays, I think we will be going for our own sometime next month. 2 direction-blind girls + 1 tropical island = a recipe for adventure (I hope)! Anyway, till our island getaway becomes official, here's a list we came up with after always talking about wanting to check this and that place out but never getting around to it.

To Go List
  1. Prince of Wales pub
  2. Whatever Cafe
  3. Indochine Wisma
  4. Indochine Waterfront
  5. Giraffe Bistro & Bar
  6. Little Bali pub
  7. Moon River Cafe
  8. Eclectic Cafe
  9. Liang Seah Street
  10. Hooters
  11. Max Brenners
  12. V Tea Room (repeat to try more desserts)
  13. Fosters
  14. Dome Cafe
  15. Marmalade Pantry

Apart from the bunch of punkass youngsters who irritated the shit out of Jason and I on our bus ride home (though I started having to disguise my giggles with coughs after one of them attempted singing), my life's pretty much mundane! Oh yes! I dreamt of a bride jumping off my block on 16 June 2006. Which was yesterday by the way. And that her veil floated to my room. BLOODY HELL! I'm still creeped.

A world outside my own.

A world outside my own.

After a couple of nights of sleeping only way after midnight and spending the next day with my nose buried in the book, I'm finally done with the Irish trilogy. What a read! To think I'd almost wanted to chuck it back into the return bin at the library when the first few pages seemed too slow-moving.

Well, I may be done with the book but I sure ain't done with satisfying my interest in all things Irish. Though, after a convo with Cassandra in which she pointed out that Westlife is an Irish band, my illusion of tall dark and roughly handsome Irish men vanished. I'm no sucker for pretty boys baby.

Here's a little Irish mythology for you. According to ireland-now.com, a banshee is actually Irish for faerie woman. With long flowing hair and eyes bloodshot from centuries of crying, the banshee is usually clad in a hooded cloak. When someone in one of Ireland's respectable families is about to die, the Banshee will be seen pacing the dark hills about his house, her white silohuette a sharp contrast against the night's darkness.
Are your goosebumps standing or what!

And may I share a poem by William Butler Yeats, taken off everything2.com.
Titled "To a Child Dancing in the Wind", it tells of an old man getting depressed watching a young girl dancing carefree at the beach while thinking of all the nasty things she will have to face in the world as she grows.

Dance there upon the shore;
What need have you to care
For wind or water's roar?
And tumble out your hair
That the sale drops have wet;
Being young you have not known
The fool's triumph, nor yet
Love lost as soon as won,
Nor the best labourer dead
And all the sheaves to bind.
What need have you to dread
The monstrous crying of wind?

Has no one said those daring
Kind eyes should be more learn'd?
Or warned you how despairing
The moths are when they are burned?
I could have warned you; but you are young,
So we speak a different tongue.

O you will take whatever's offered
And dream that all the world's a friend,
Suffer as your mother suffered,
Be as broken in the end.
But I am old and you are young,
And I speak a barbarous tongue.

Meaningful huh? Alright, crash course for the day's over!

Goodbye straw head.

Goodbye straw head.

Knowing that I wouldn't be able to stomach another day of my hay-like hair, I popped over to my stylist for a trim and a much needed treatment. It set me back QUITE ABIT, but I'm digging the results. For the first time since I'd permed my hair months ago, it is actually soft and swishable without that damned styling lotion. -swish swish-

I think I'd be feeling much better if I weren't so stuffed! It's been almost four hours since my last meal and I've yet to start feeling less like one of those stuffed teddies. Whatever possessed Jason and I to share a large waffle with two scoops of ice-cream after a pasta dinner??? Oh yeah, it's Waffle Tuesday. Hahaha!

My appetite's decreased quite abit of late, though it's starting to pick up again. Gone are my days of dessert stuffing. Which is good, right?

I'm onto my second day of listening to Ireland Forever. I'm still trying to spot that Irish lilt Nora Roberts mentioned in her book, and to really differentiate what it is about Irish music that sets it apart from the rest. Apart from the generous use of hornpipes that is. That seems to be the only difference I can hear. Please, go listen to a track by The Corrs and tell me. (Oh yes baby, they're Irish.)

Alrighty, time to hit the bed and get on with the trilogy. Gotta be up before the noon time sun if I wish to jog off all that sugar. Night world!

Stone circles dancing in a farmer's field.

Stone circles dancing in a farmer's field.
feeling: dreamy
spinning: damien rice - cannonball

I love losing myself in a good book. There's something almost sacred about entering the realm where everything, from the stiffness in my back to the sound of the tv blaring in the background, fades away.

For several days now, I have been the welcome intruder in Brianna Concannon's bed and breakfast in West Ireland. Now, there's a certain predictability to the endings in all the Nora Roberts' novels I've read. In spite of that, I find myself impatiently paging through her books time and time again, savoring every word yet anxious to reach the end. Such is the magic of Nora Roberts. I do wish I had half her talent for telling tales.

Her Born In trilogy has got me all interested in Ireland. Endless rolling hills, fields sleeping under the mists, tiny villages with crooked streets... I am even intrigued by Gaelic! (That's the traditional language of the Irish I believe.) Unlike many, I've barely toyed with the idea of an European holiday and here I am, visiting the Tourism Ireland website and listening to an Irish radio station online.

Now, all this is coming from someone who doesn't give two hoots about the Irish. In fact, I have only just realized that Celtic music is actually Irish music and not what I'd initially assumed to be chanting. And I've also learnt that Damien Rice, Enya and Sinead O'Connor are Irish musicians. How many years have I spent in oblivion? I have developed a new found interest in all things Irish! I'm even thinking of indulging my urge to pick up some Irish literature!

This is the beauty of life I think. Discovering that the world is so big yet so small at the same time.

In introspection.

In introspection.
feeling: introspective?
spinning: john mayer - comfortable

Today feels like such a long day despite the long nap I took in the afternoon. Restless energy's coursing through my veins and I have no idea how to let it out. My body's not yearning for a run or a swim and lethargy is all I have to combat the nerves. Sinking my seemingly limp body into the couch, tuning out the sounds of MTV blaring in the background and allowing my mind on a trip to a Nora Roberts spun Ireland seemed good enough for awhile. Only for awhile.

Like I told my sister when I crouched beside her in front of the washing machine as she nursed a cigarette, it feels like Christmas today. Perhaps it's the slight chill in the air.

I feel like I'm waiting for something that I'm not sure I want anymore. Am I so set in my comfort zone that my innermost dreams and wants have been blurred to seem unreachable? Will there be a rainbow after the rain, and will I find my pot of gold at the other end of it?

As lovers go.

As lovers go.
feeling: inspired
spinning: mig ayesa - baby i love your way

A friend was telling me today about the "break-up season". Apparently, January to June are the favored months for break-ups, while July to December are favored for hook-ups. I can't vouch for it entirely, but I do know that quite a few couples are going through rather rough patches of late.

Along with the good times, I am pretty sure most relationships would have had their fair share of the bad. Arguments... tears... tension. Caught in the storm of such dark clouds, one inevitably and usually wishes for an escape to a sunny place. But seriously, stay too long on a sundrenched isle and see if you will wish for the coolness of rain. Such is the insatiable contentment of humans. Next time you're caught in the storm, try wishing for an umbrella instead.

I guess what I am trying to say is that when arguments and conflicts arise, it is easy to be clouded by the ugliness and to lose track of what it is about that person that you fell in love with. Try looking past the obstacles and feel with your heart.

Now, I've had my fair share of shit and there were times when I was almost at a complete loss. What I've learnt though is that when one's vision clouds over, the heart feels what the eyes can't see. Each time I heard a love song and had the lyrics play in my head, uncertainties became just that bit more certain. And I wish the same for you. Now, scoot here and listen to Mig Ayesa's rendition of Baby I Love Your Way.

I know I've said it one too many times, but his performance gets to me everytime!
"Usually during a performance, I am busy thinking of what comments to give after. During yours however, all I could think of was how much I love my wife." Carmen Electra's hubby Dave, who is one of the judges on Rock Star INXS, says it all.

Shadows grow so long before my eyes
And they're moving across the page
Suddenly the day turns into night
Far away from the city
But don't hesitate
'Cos your love
Your love won't wait

Ooh baby I love your way
Everyday
I wanna tell you I love your way
Everyday
I wanna be with you night and day

I can see the sunset in your eyes
Brown and grey and blue besides
Clouds are stalking islands in the sun
Wish I could buy one out of season
But don't, don't hesitate
'Cos your love
Your love won't wait

Ooh baby I love your way
Everyday
I wanna tell you I love your way
I wanna be with you night and day

Baby I love your way

Love aside, I am now an official graduate of Diploma in Hospitality Management, Temasek Polytechnic! Pictures another day. The day's hype has got me all worn out. Night folks.

Strangers.

Strangers.
feeling: the achey lovin' feeling
spinning: michael bolton - to love somebody

To me, a successful chick flick is one that has me swooning for at least a week after. While it's been a long time since a chick flick last shot an arrow through my heart, I am still holding out for the one romantic flick that will once again leave me walking around in a love-drugged state.

She Is The Man was enjoyable and worth quite a few good laughs, but (now, even Ceci - the Queen of Romance agreed), it was a little too cheesy. What impacted me tonight however was not the movie, but the audience who caught the flick together with us. Each time Amanda Bynes pulled off a crazy stunt, we cheered and clapped and in that moment, we were more than just mere strangers sharing a cinema. And in that moment, Singapore just got a little smaller and cosier.

Got home with eight minutes to spare to catch North Shore. Guess what. The season finale's next Tuesday. And that's it! That's all the North Shore dosage I am gonna have. Damn. Tuesdays will never be the same again.

Well, the recent episodes have definitely topped my romance chart. Today's episode had Delta Goodrem and MJ (one of the leads) singing To Love Somebody and now I can't get that song out of my mind. I really really can't wait to see Jason and Nicole, Gabriel and Lisa, and MJ and Chris get back together. I bet you think I'm blabbering. Here, the lyrics of To Love Somebody to save your sanity.

There's a light
A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be
Lived with you, lived with you

There's a way
Everybody say
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring
If I ain't got you, ain't got

You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody, to love somebody
The way I love you

In my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind, so very blind

I'm a man
Can't you see what I am
I live and breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain't got you, ain't got you

You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody, to love somebody
The way I love you

Overdrive.

Overdrive.
feeling: drugged
spinning: jem - stay now

This song always makes me think of North Shore! The tangled webs of love are enough to keep me lusting for more each week. Seriously, let me fall in love in paradise like them and I don't think I will ever fall out of it. White sandy beaches, clear crystal waters, balmy sea breezes... come on, those are the essential ingredients for a cocktail of luuurve I say!

Bad news though. FOX is always cancelling all the shows I get hooked on. First it was Miss Match and now, according to an online forum, North Shore's gonna be axed pretty soon. This sucks. I think the Tuesday 10pm slot on Starworld is jinxed. Can't seem to find the North Shore series in vcd/dvd. Please, tag me if you know ANYTHING about it.

Got to watch Romy and Michele's High School Reunion earlier. Two words - totally bimbotic. Even an almost-bimbo like me found it hard to stomach! I wonder how Jason got through the movie without a complaint.

Alright, enough of blogging. I'm snuggling under the covers for an early night. Meeting Lanxi for a game of tennis tomorrow - gotta be up bright and early to wipe the layer of dust off my racket. It's been about two years I think? I predict a session of ball-picking, haha! Gonna then be zipping off to meet Ceci for a chick flick before barelling back home in time for North Shore later in the night. Busy, but it sure beats being a couch potato.

Coffee for the caffeined.

Coffee for the caffeined.
feeling: light-hearted
spinning: keri noble - talk to me

It feels like forever since I last did a proper textual posting! Now, if you hadn't gotten the gist of it, let me tell you - monsoon Phuket was NO sunny tropical holiday. At least I saved on my SPF50 sunblock...

A couple of weeks back, Kelly commented that she hasn't been reading about my usual coffee catch-ups that I blog about so frequently. Well, a month's worth of fashion buzz has finally died down and I've gotten my life back on track to my days of leisure, haha!

Caught up with Jem over lunch at Scotts on Friday. Laughed ALOT when he told me about one of his potential dates - The Singapore Bimbo. Picked up a couple of cds as well. My week ahead seems pretty packed, but I hope I'll be able to watch Romy and Michele's High School Reunion sometime soon. Lisa Kudrow (Phobe in F.R.I.E.N.D.S) is one of the leads... bet it'll be rib-tickling.

Caught 160 Characters with Ceci at the Esplanade last night. It was a short play but enjoyable nonetheless. Tried sharing the belly-clutching funny scenes with Jason but it just wasn't the same as watching it. And I totally enjoyed the post-play analysis over tea and an obscenely expensive strawberry dessert at The V Tea Room. Actually, we talked about everything - business plans, guys, people; except the play. Hahaha!

Less than 24 hours later, I got my ass down to town for an afternoon of shopping with... you got it, Ceci. It was supposed to be her spending her moola on office wear, but I got myself a Crumpler, a blusher brush and a striped tank as well. Tsk! I hate shopping with that girl!
Okay okay, you know I love you my bestest shopping buddy. We trawl the shops like nobody's business... which really is nobody's business, come to think of it. Haha!
I am infatuated with this totally awesome polka dotted tube top. (Scroll down for the picture.) It's fun, it's cute, it's casual yet dressy enough. However, even the smallest size was too loose. One tug and woohoohoo... Urghs.

Off to bed in abit. Gotta be up bright and early for piano tomorrow before meeting Lanxi for a swim. :) Life's good baby.
