Friends say the darnest things.

Two of my bestest girlfriends have, in the recent weeks, said some things that made me LOL. Even in retrospect.

Ceci (aka moisturiser/scent addict) on Aesop
Me: I love shopping at Aesop. Stepping into an Aesop shop instantly transports me back to
that rainy Sydney morning.
Ceci: Ya the smell's so calming. At the end of a shit day, there's Aesop.

 Jins, world-class lazy bum
Me (after a press trip where I was plied with way too much food): Babe I need to detox.
Jin: Ok, let's go to a retreat where we do nothing but sit by the pool and drink smoothies all day.

It's not your fault if you don't find it funny. My sense of humour is known to be a little... different. But I'm documenting this all the same for future stress-busting!

Laughter is the best medicine.

Laughter is the best medicine.

I was just thinking the other day that it has been awhile since I had a real, hearty laugh. Not one of those half-hearted (read: polite) sniggers or giggles, but the kind that leaves you gasping for air as quakes of humor send the body into uncontrollable shakes.

And then I saw a clip from last Thursday's KTV session, where a very dear friend danced (the exact MTV steps mind you!) to a teeny bopper song with the comfortable confidence of countless afternoons of practice.

It brought tears to my eyes.

Butterfly babies.

Butterfly babies.

I've got a last minute interview scheduled for tomorrow morning and those baby butterflies in my belly are starting to flutter their tiny wings. I'm not star-struck, but there's something about shrewd women that leaves me intimated yet slightly in awe. I have no choice but to strut in there and kick ass. Now keep your fingers crossed for me will you? ;)

Meanwhile, this is the only sane portrait from last night's insanity.

From fake birthdays just so we could have our cake and eat it to a falling gecko on my head, lewd jokes fueled by overactive imaginations to downing too much way too quickly in a whirlwind drinking game... I'm curious to know just what adventures we'll get into when we head off to a tiny Indonesian island two weeks from now. I'm psyched!

There's a reason to believe we almost got it right.

There's a reason to believe we almost got it right.

I used to have a picture of me grinning as my MSN display picture, and Mich has been giving me hell about how she has the urge to draw on whiskers each time she sees it. I've recently changed it to a picture of my newly pierced belly, and as I was sending her the pictures we took at dinner last night, here's what she had to say.

Mich: Eh, I really wanna add whiskers for you leh.
Me: What? On my belly??!
Mich: What whiskers on your belly? Hello, have you seen a cat?
Me: But I've changed my display pic already...
Mich: Ya I know, but one of the pictures you sent me, you grin until cannot see your eyes. (That's the last one posted up there.)

Ah, so that was the picture she was talking about... Am I the only person who finds this even remotely funny?

On a side note, B's back from his mountain trip with an injured ankle and bruised coccyx as souvenirs from the climb. Gotta admit I didn't know what a coccyx was until we started dating. Haha.

Love is expensive - 72€ in fact.

Love is expensive - 72€ in fact.

Me: Je suis dans l'amour avec un grosse vache.
B: ????? what do you mean? "I'm in love with a fat cow?"
Me: Yes, is it wrong?
Me: Baby are you laughing? Haha.
B: I understand what you're saying, but I am laughing.
B: Cos what you say could be interpreted as "I'm in the love
in the fat cow!" But that's cute baby!

HAHAHA oops? No thanks to the Babelfish translator.

I've been feeling pretty crabby for various reasons, but sharing a few chuckles over our two-hour MSN convo pretty much distracted and soothed the grouchiness. We're sticking to MSN for awhile, after we realized last night's 30-minute phone call cost him 72 euros. That, according to my trusty currency converter, is equivalent to S$152.90!

And I thought I wasn't high maintenance... haha.

Road trippin' and intoxicated teetotallers.

Road trippin' and intoxicated teetotallers.

Raghu took me out on his bike yesterday to Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat, to see the stepwells of Gujarat and the famed Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple. We set off at 4 p.m. with the sun on our faces and the wind in our hair, and of course the infamous Ahmedabad dust clogging our pores.

After I got used to the momentum of riding out the many humps and potholes on the road, I stopped hanging onto the seat/his shoulders (whichever instinct had me grabbing onto first) for dear life and got a little trigger happy capturing our shadows.

After about an hour, we left dusty Ahmedabad behind and arrived at the stepwells of Gujarat, a seven-storey architectural beauty.

Exploring the damp and musty depths required nimble maneuvering. One of the well-watchers told Raghu that someone had fallen to his death a few days earlier. It sounds a little implausible, but the structure does have several potentially treacherous nooks and crannies.

Perilous conditions aside, the stepwells were indeed awe-inspiring. The filtering sunlight had shadows dancing around the columns, and navigating the narrow steps had me feeling a little like Lara Croft in Tomb Raider (yes yes minus the double-D boobs).

Shadow and light. Spot us?

We made an impromptu stop at a wildlife sanctuary/zoo, where I saw Bambi-like deers.

We arrived at the Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple at twilight, and I was astounded by its beauty. Photography is prohibited, so here's an official picture from Getty Images. My first thought upon seeing the lighted-up temple was - sheesh, this looks like Disneyland.

Dinner was at Hyderabadi Biryani, one of the only two restaurants Raghu actually patronizes in Ahmedabad. Over the faultless chicken dum biryani, eaten with raita (the white sauce) and gravy (the orange sauce); we exchanged recipes, and I think I should be able to whip up a dish of dhal and lemon fried rice when I return to Singapore.

I can't fathom how we managed the space after our biryani dinner, but we stopped at a street stall for pretty excellent kulfi-tasting ice-cream. That was also when the rain started, and we rode the 20-minute road back to MICA in bone-chilling winds and icy pelts of rain.

After a hot shower to chase away the chills, I headed over to the Champa hostel with Erwin and Nuria, where the CCC and RCM peeps were celebrating Himanshu's birthday. That's the birthday boy in red and grey.

A semi-sober Niraj, just a few drinks away from going topless and pawing Erwin.

People in various states of intoxication.

With alcohol, the quiet became chatty, the chatty became chattier, and the irritating became amusing. There was quite a bit of pawing, fighting and kissing going on, and some were caught in hilariously compromising positions. All in good fun, all in good fun. Happy birthday Himanshu!

Baygone for the faint-hearted.

Baygone for the faint-hearted.

I've never been one of those girls who caught spiders in jars and kept beetles in matchboxes. Bugs, especially those blessed with the power of flight, creep me out.

I am thus not the happiest camper right now, for summer in India is when the roaches and hoppers come out to play. On my territory.

I was all comfy at 3 a.m., with my legs propped up against the wall and my Macbook balanced somewhat precariously on my stomach, when a brownish black smudge darted across the white-washed walls.

Instinct had me performing kung fu moves that would have possibly made Jackie Chan proud. I put my Macbook safely away, did a pseudo somersault, and headed for the Baygone bottle I kept under my desk for emergencies as such. I had to fumble a little with the plastic wrap, and when I whipped around with my finger on the nozzle, the pesky roach was nowhere to be seen. Undeterred, I sprayed a little Baygone at the corner of the room, hoping that the smell would chase it away.

Fast forward to an hour later. I had just gotten off the phone with B, and was snuggled up in bed. Yet, sleep wouldn't claim me, and for a good 45 minutes, I drifted in and out of semi-consciousness with the nagging feeling that something was watching me.

Finally, I threw off the blankets and switched on the lights. Lo and behold, the black smudge, or what looks like a mutated cockroach, was on the floor five metres from me.

I hesitated - could I close my eyes and pretend that it'd go away, or would I spend a sleepless night in paranoia? Paranoia won, and I crept around it for my trusty Baygone bottle.

Squirt. Spray. Squirt. Spray. It look about five sprays before the roach stopped struggling. With an old magazine, I swept it away.

And no, sleep did not come easy after the mini-workout. I spent another hour brushing at my face and legs in the dark. India. Sigh.

Hedwig would flip.

Hedwig would flip.

From a fashion article in Femina magazine (the Indian equivalent of Singapore's Her World) - What to learn from Bollywood:

"Always wear your sari below the navel and your blouse above your ribs. That's how you get to be the sexy-but-virtuous cow."

ROFL.

Spread the giggles.

Spread the giggles.

"leigh says: (12:24:27 AM)
the guy is so handsome

leigh says: (12:24:28 AM)
i wanna swoon

Ting Yi - Show me how to love like You have loved me says: (12:24:34 AM)
ok.

Ting Yi - Show me how to love like You have loved me says: (12:24:38 AM)
i send you my photo later."

I just had to post that up for laughs. And I was not referring to Mcdreamy, but some new boys in Gossip Girls. I've found something to fill the lull between Grey and Private Practice episodes.

The prawn diaries.

The prawn diaries.

HM came by to pass me some unmentionables, so I stuck to my end of my bargain and made lunch. Nothing fancy pancy, just garlic prawns and bok choy stir-fry. The recipe called for it to be served on a bed of herbed rice but alas, I don't have a garden overflowing with mint leaves and parsley. So I used rice stick noodles instead.

The pretty average taste's nothing worth mentioning really, but I must talk about my harrowing experience with shelling the prawns.

I took the bag of prawns out from the fridge, untied the knot, and stared dumbfounded into a mass of feelers and slimy grey shells. I don't know why, but I couldn't quite bring myself to put my hands on them.

So I dumped the prawns onto the chopping board, and hacked off the heads without actually touching them. Quite a feat I must say, but avoidance only got me this far. There was no way I could shell the prawns with only a knife without risking any self-amputations.

So I took a deep breath, and rather daintily picked up a prawn in my left hand, only to instinctively fling it away once my right fingers made contact.

In all honesty, this isn't my virgin experience shelling prawns, so I couldn't quite drum up an explanation for the sudden squeamish behavior. And I was honestly rather dumbfounded by me! So I sucked it up, took a deep breath (of fishy prawns) and literally talked myself through the process of shelling those 10 prawns. A series of "what is wrong with you?", "come on" and "don't be silly" later and I was finally done. Phew.

No prawns for awhile now.

Singapore lah.

Singapore lah.
feeling: tickled.
The following msn convo with Jem has stirred up memories of the time at the dinner table, when Ceci, CH, Ken and I attempted to converse in nothing but dialects. It was, well, one step short of a language disaster.

Jem...J for JENIUS says: (11:16:22 PM)

P.s. "Bee bee" is nothing vulgar. You know the popular saying "steady bom bee bee?" There you go.

Pounding pavements in chilly air.

Pounding pavements in chilly air.
feeling: wide awake at midnight
music: janet seidel - c'est si bon (it's so good)

My runs have been a little lacklustre lately, and it's hard to want to get up and out after a couple of successive uninspiring sessions. It could be the bite in the air, or John Mayer singing into my ears, or the fact that my body's just not cut out for morning runs, but I had one of my better runs this evening. Ahhh.

It's been quite a weekend - a birthday, a gathering, and yet another birthday. I almost always get my knickers in a twist when it feels like I'm not gonna have any time to myself, but I found time to have breakfast with my aunt at the cafe outside on a rainy Saturday morning, as well as to spend a bit of a time in the library reading up on yoga, ayurveda and DIY painting books. I've yet to get around to even choosing the colors for the walls. Nor to scour furniture shops for a new desk, bookcase and tv chest.

Those can wait. I've got plans to chase the blues by baking up a storm tomorrow. And I'm able to do so 'cos I've managed to switch newswriting tutorials to Wednesdays. So tomorrow'll be just a semi-killer Tuesday. 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. straight. I survived last week, so tomorrow should be easy peasy!

Off to bed, not that sleep's gonna come easy after how I concussed earlier in the afternoon, or how hard I laughed when my aunt tried to teach me how to roll my tongue for Malay. But I'll try.

Kids, please don't try this at home.

Kids, please don't try this at home.
feeling: knackered
music: acid house kings - sunday morning

Today marked the first of my many 10 hour non-stop Tuesdays. 4 hours in the Maclab for Publication Design, an hour and 45 minutes zonking/laughing in Visual Comm lecture with 15 minutes to pee/gobble sandwich/run to South Spine for my 1.5 hour Malay elective, and 3 minutes to run like mad to Hedwig's Newswriting.

While it felt good to rush with a purpose, I am almost sure I started having double vision towards the end of the day. Pffff.

Malay tutorial was interesting though. Our tutor was talking about the complexities of the English language, and the discrepancies between the spelling and pronounciation of words. These were his examples:

T: "Why is laugh spelled as l-a-u-g-h and pronounced as 'laff'?"
T: "So if 'gh' is pronounced as 'ff', why is ghetto not pronounced as 'ffeto'?"

And here's the kicker.

T: "K-n-o-c-k. How do you pronounce that? 'Nock'. Why don't you go around 'kenock kenock'?"

LOL.

If you fancy a laugh. Or two.

If you fancy a belly aching laugh. Or two.
feeling: tickled

What resulted from my post-briefing chocolate night out with the gang turned out to be a night of belly aching laughs, thanks for standup comedians Marc and Fagan; and Jane's useful Tampon 101.

Check out the vids. I know, I'm not a fan of having to load vids, but these are painlessly short - 20 seconds max. So go on, laugh your head off.

Marc sells me bust-enhancing solution
